Background:                The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia 

(RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental institution, owned and managed by its Member States, for the generation and application of early warning information. RIMES evolved from the efforts of countries in Africa and Asia, in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, to establish a regional early warning system within a multi-hazard framework for the generation and communication of early warning information, and capacity building for preparedness and response to trans-boundary hazards. RIMES was established on 30 April 2009, and was registered with the United Nations on 1 July 2009. RIMES operates from its regional early warning center located at the campus of the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathumthani.

Position Description: The objective of this position is to support system developers of RIMES HQ office and countries’ office, in updating, maintaining, and processing the climate data, in order to support systems development of RIMES.

Scope of Work

  • The Data Processing Specialist will have the following specific tasks: 

  • Programming: Develop scripts for updating, monitoring, and processing climate data.

  • Management: Placing the climate datasets, making sure the data is in the correct category folders and locations. 

  • Daily routine: Monitor and record the daily/monthly data update.

  • Daily routine: Check the quality of daily and monthly updated data.

  • Daily routine: Process the newly updated data in RIMES standard. 

  • Daily routine: Monitor and record the status of data servers (twice per day).

  • Daily routine: Check duplicate data in data servers.

  • Project Support: Process data based on the requirements of the projects or developers 

  • Project Support: Support system developer to optimize the data processing chain for faster data processing speed. 

  • Documentation: Update and maintain the <RIMES Data Inventory>

  • Daily report: Data update, Quality of new data, Status of data server.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of operating systems (Linux, Unix-like).
  • Basic knowledge of data structure
  • Basic knowledge of statistics.
  • Basic knowledge of programming concept
  • Basic knowledge of documentation

Experience:

  • Current or fresh graduate students are welcome

Skills and abilities: 

  • Able to work in Linux CLI environment.
  • Basic python programming skill.
  • Documentation and record-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.

Personal qualities: 

  • Flexibility in adapting to new technologies, changing environments, and unexpected challenges.
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to team projects and initiatives.
  • Creativity in developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Efficient in managing time and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Basic English
